I got this motherboard combo off of newegg with the i7 4790K, it came with the Gigabyte G1.Sniper Z97 motherboard, but appearently, it's not compatible with the 4790K out of the box, it needs a BIOS update. So without trying to get an older CPU to throw on it to update the BIOS, which Motherboards are out of the box compatible with the 4790K?

It's less a matter of models than it is matter of BIOSs or MoBo "Stepping" ... tho Z97 should be compatible.

The new Series 9 Z97 and H97 chipsets features support for not only the Haswell Refresh (Devils Canyon), but also Broadwell, too.

Around the middle of 2014, Intel released a refresh of Haswell, simply titled Haswell Refresh. When compared to the original Haswell CPUs lineup, Haswell Refresh CPUs offer a modest increase in clock frequencies.[68] Haswell Refresh CPUs are supported by Intel's new 9 Series chipsets (Z97 and H97, codenamed Wildcat Point), while motherboards with 8 Series chipsets (codenamed Lynx Point) usually require a BIOS update to support Haswell Refresh CPUs.[69]

The CPUs codenamed Devil's Canyon, covering the i5 and i7 K-series stock keeping units (SKUs), employ a new and improved thermal interface material (TIM) called next-generation polymer thermal interface material (NGPTIM).

Normally it's Z87's need the upgrade. I have never needed to do one for Z97.

Motherboard models have various versions or "steppings" .... as each one comes out, it comes with the latest one available at that time. So one board of an later stepping will be fine and one of an earlier stepping will not .... but agaib, I have never had, nor heard of, a compatibility issue with Devil's Canyon and Z97.

If you still wanna change, I'd recommend the MSI or Gigabyte Gaming 5's for their outstanding price / performance ratio.
