First off I don't know much about computers but I am trying to learn how they work and how to fix my own myself. Anyway I had a hp 700 414 and I have since upgraded the psu and put in a graphics card as well as put everything into a new corsair case. My question is I now want to upgrade the motherboard but im not sure of how to do it the correct way. I know how to physically remove the old and put in the new one but the formatting and all that is very new to me. I am not worried about loosing data that's not a big deal.

started off with HP 700 414 I have put in the following:

EVGA 500 psu
EVGA 960 FTW 4gb Graphics card
Corsair Spec 02 case

I was looking at putting in MSI Z97-G45 PC Gaming LGA 1150 ATX Intel Motherboard

No. When you install Windows, when it asks you where you want to install it, it should give you the option to format the drive (always recommended). This will erase anything that currently resides on the drive.

First and foremost what is your cpu as that determines what motherboard you need (or are planning on getting a different CPU).

The other large factor you are likely not considering is that you will need to purchase a new Windows license.
The license key on your HP tower is tied to your motherboard and is an HP specific product key. Now there is a possibility that you can call Microsoft and tell them the motherboard died and they will activate your old HP key, but that at best is a 50/50 chance.

Specs for the HP Envy 700-414 state the system has an Intel Core I5-4570, but the OP will need to confirm that. The question I have is why the OP wants to upgrade the motherboard.

The process, itself is not that difficult.

1) Power down the system
2) Disconnect all cables from the front/rear of the system (to include power).
3) Open the case/Remove the Side Panel.
4) Disconnect all cables from the old motherboard.
5) Remove any components that may interfere with the removal of the old motherboard and/or installation of the new motherboard.
6) Remove the 8-12 screws attaching the motherboard to the case's motherboard tray.
7) Remove the RAM.
8) Remove the CPU Heat Sink/Fan assembly.
9) Remove the CPU.
10) Remove the old thermal paste from the CPU and Heat Sink.
11) Install the processor into the new motherboard.
12) Apply new thermal paste to the processor.
13) Install the Heat Sink/Fan assembly.
14) Install the RAM.
15) Install the Motherboard into the case.
16) Re-attached all cables to the new motherboard.
17) Reinstall any components removed for the installation of the new motherboard.
18) Close the case.
19) Attach all necessary cables to the rear on the system (to include power)
20) Close the case.
21) Power up the system and enter BIOS.
22) Change the Boot Priority to boot from CD/DVD or USB first.
23) Insert the new Operating System DVD/USB Image. Note, you can no Longer use the OS license that came with your system.
24) Save changes in BIOS and boot the system from the OS Image.
25) Install Windows.

Edit: Can someone else take a look at these steps to make sure I didn't forget one?
