I would like to attach an external USB drive to my router and use it to backup multiple Windows and Mac computers. What is the best way to partition the drive so that I can write both to same disk?

Thanks

Solution
Since you are using it as a network store, it is more a question of what network protocols your router supports. You will want to let the router format the disk in the native Linux format. Then it is a question of setting up Windows sharing and NFS to share to the Mac.

A router will not provide very good performance. You really need dedicated NAS (network attached storage) hardware to get good performance.

Hey there, GetFed!

@kanewolf pretty much said it all. You won't be getting the desired performance if you keep your external connected to the router, unless it's a network-specific drive (NAS).
I suppose the best way to back up both your Mac and Windows computers would be to either to divide the external into 2 partitions (NTFS for Windows OS and HFS+ for Mac OS) or you could simply use the FAT32 file system to be able to access (read and write) the content on the drive from either one computer. However, the FAT32 format comes with some limitations you should be aware of, here's a link from our KB that lists them: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=bfJfbF
I'd also suggest you a link that explains how to convert the formats through Disk Management: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=Rf72wN

Hope these help. Good luck! :)
