Ok guys; after playing a torrent version of dead island(well into the game it crashes and won't launch), i find a deal on a used pc dvd rom and bought it. it's the standard version, not GOTY. My question, please, is will i need to find and install a 'patch' or will it play ok as is? thanks!

1) Tom's Hardware does not support software piracy in any form. Do not discuss illegal torrents or "patches" here.
2) While you may have purchased the DVD, that would not have removed any "extras" you may have downloaded from the torrent site
3) Assuming you can validate the copy you purchased, it should work as is.
