AsRock z77 Extreme 4 - PWM not behaving as specified

Hey Guys,

Has anyone had much success with the PWM control options in BIOS on the z77 Extreme 4?

I have my fans set to automatic mode, level 1, target temp 65°C. My understanding is that this means my fans will stay on level one unless the CPU goes over 65°C in which case they will ramp up accordingly to get the temps back down again.

My problem is the fans ramp up to 100% whilst gaming regardless of what I ask them to do via BIOS. Just spent an hour playing The Witcher with the fans going full blast even though the max temps my CPU recorded were 57 - 55 - 60 - 57°C and the max temps my GPUs recorded were 57 and 60°C. In reality is was running mostly about 4 or 5°C lower as they were the max temps recorded during spikes.

So as you can see, all temps are within the specified parameters but the PWM control ramps up to 100% regardless. This happens with all games btw.

Set up:

8 PWM fans via Swifttech 8 way PWM PCB splitter connected to CHA_FAN1
PWM D5 connected to CPU_FAN1

The problem is the same no matter which PWM header I connect the splitter to on the mobo.

[strike]With a splitter there is no ability to read PWM. [/strike]

Strike that :)

The Swiftech tries to circumvent that. Not sure if it works successfully, but if you read the manual for it, http://www.swiftech.com/8-WayPWMsplitter.aspx, then you will see they recommend CPU-FAN for the RPM control.

FYI, I have the Extrem6 mobo with fewer fans directly connected to the fan headers on the mobo and they are all obeying PWM control.

Yea unfortunately the problem is the same whichever header I connect to. The fans start off at low rpms but will start to ramp up after a few minutes and eventually end up on 100% regardless of temps.

For grins and testing, set your BIOS fan control back to default, then connect one or two fans directly to the motherboard headers and see what happens...

I'll try that later when I get a chance however I suspect this will just heat up incredibly quickly resulting in the fans spinning up to 100% as there will be only 2 fans trying to do the work of 9 over 3 rads.

I have another custom made 10 way splitter PCB in a box somewhere, if I can find it I will try that to rule out the Swiftech splitter.

Yes.

But we're now way off base. Connect the Swiftech fan controller to the CPU_FAN header as recommended. Have as many fans on there as you need, but then move two fans to the 2 PWM fan headers on the mobo. Then set the mobo fan controls to default, and check to see if it controls the fans on the mobo normally or give you an indication of aberrant temps that may cause the fans to run fast.

PS. Also make sure you're not by chance mixing Fahrenheit and Celsius settings in different readings. Not likely, but the thought just occurred to me that this may be a reason the fans ramp up.
