Hello everyone,

I currently have an i5-2500k overclocked to 4.2ghz. I can’t seem to get it higher without my motherboard pooping on me.

I was wondering if I should upgrade to a i5-4690k or just wait for Broadwell.

When I play Battlefield my CPU usage goes up to about 90-95% and I’m not sure if it’s bottlenecking my GTX 970. I get around 70-80 fps on max settings, in 1080p. My 970 is overclocked quite a bit though.

I currently have the budget to upgrade but I’m not sure if I should, as it seems like broadwell is looming close by.

How much do you think the new processors will be?

I also will be upgrading to a 1440p panel soon if that might change some opinions!

Thanks!

It is targeted for low power uses, mainly laptops, all-in-ones, and small form factors. It won't really appeal to you much. Additionally, even though it is "out", very very few places are actually selling it and it is rather expensive.

Skylake should be here in a month or two though, so wait for that.

A few things to help you choose:

- Currently you have socket 1155 and will have to change your motherboard no matter which upgrade you choose
- i5-4690k and i5-5675C (broadwell) are both socket 1150. Broadwell is about $50-$60 more expensive.
- Broadwell offers much better integrated graphics and lower power consumption (19-23W less powerusage). However performance in combination with a graphics card is marginaly faster than the 4690k.
- Skylake is socket 1151. A new socket again so choosing this is more future proof in terms of having to replace the motherboard if you want to change out the cpu once more. The Core i7-6700K and Core i5-6500K will be released on 5th August 2015. Source
