How do I get my router to stop throttling my Internet speed?

My network router, a Linksys WRT54G v2 wired/wi-fi router, is throttling my download speeds terribly. This is understandable for my Wi-Fi units, but it does the same to the wired units too.

I use Charter Cable Internet and have speeds of about 60mbps when connected directly to the cable MODEM. But when I put my router between the MODEM and my computers, the speed drops by 2/3rd to about 20mbps.

How do I change this? Do I need a newer router?

Yes, you need a newer router. I picked up this one when we got decent internets: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833704130

I didn't need the wireless and this router sits at the top of the chain in my house so it was a perfect fit. You should be able to talk to your ISP and have them give you a router to use. If not, there are some decent ones around but make sure you do your homework on what you need it to do. There are some decent Asus ones that can accept DD-WRT if that is your thing.
