Looking for opinions/rating if my build is optimal for $1700 and if there needs to be any changes to certain slots to improve performance. Building my 2nd PC ever and I want this one to last a good 3-5 years with minimal upgrades. I will use it to game such as (league of legends, H1Z1, Smite, Counter-Strike, etc) and it will be my everyday PC for school, surfing, etc. Please let me know if anything is needed or if something does not work well with each other. I am trying to get a red and black theme so to speak. Here is my final build http://pcpartpicker.com/p/hGHbHx Any help is greatly appreciated

8/10. Overkill for gaming but excellent at that. :)
Fixed the PSU quality issue. Saved a bit of cash with a different GPU that has slightly faster clocks.
If you are gaming and not doing editing change to the i5 it will save you a hundred dollars and be a better overall build for what you are doing.
If these things get fixed it would be a 10 of 10 for value for sure and a 10 of 10 for quality. With the i7 kept and the changes I made below it is a 9.0 of 10 for value and 10 of 10 for quality.

144 Hz monitors are only really useful if you want to wear 3D glasses or you have a massively powerful graphics card out of proportion to the monitors resolution that would cause screen tearing on a 60 Hz monitor .

Personally I'd rather have a moderate 4K 60 Hz build . The monitor is going to stay current far longer

thank you and is the EVGA 970 the better of the 970's? I always thought MSI and Gigabyte had the best 970's out there and also can the evo cooler really keep the temps down on an i7 core? I did see that part earlier but I wasn't convinced unless i looked at the wrong places

thank you very much and as I asked the other guy how come the EVGA 970 over the MSI or another? I always thought MSI and Gigabyte had the most reliable 970's on the market and also you are talking about the i5 4690k? How much of a difference is the i7 to the i5

thank you for your input and having a 4k 60hz monitor runs 1440p? i was reading that some people regreted switching to 1440 from 1080p atm before i picked out this build

Just no, on that power supply, and you made the system more expensive. Nothing wrong with a 144hz monitor considering they planned on using a GTX 970, @ 1080p.

OP, your system overall was pretty good, I would make some changes though. PSU was not a good choice, and motherboard is more expensive than necessary.

I have a ASUS Z97-A and unless you plan to use PCI slots I would just go with the Z97-Pro. The Pro replaces the old PCI slots with PCI-E x1 slots. So if you plan to add a M.2 SSD then get the pro so you could later add a sound card and/or wifi/bluetooth card.

Compare the Asus-A with the Asus-E and ask yourself if the A really has any features you would use that the E doesn't offer.

EVGA makes great nvidia cards. I chose that particular EVGA because of the price. It happens to be the one on sale. No other reason. If the MSI was cheaper I would have picked it. It's not worth $20 more.

Yes the CM 212 EVO will keep the i7 cool.

Personally, I would rather play at 1440p than 144hz 1080p.

The 4K screen is a higher resolution even than 1440p
Check out a tv store near you and compare 1080p and 4K resolution screens . The 1080p looks crude .
Yes the hardware is at its limits gaming at higher resolutions . But you can turn off image details like AA and AF because all these do is compensate for the pixelation of a screen at 4K there is much less .

Remember you spend your time looking at the monitor . Not the hardware in the case , nor the case itself .
Build for the higher resolution screen is something you will not regret . The whole industry is moving to 4K
