I received a Disk Read error today. I think it was because there was a voltage fluctuation yesterday, after which I have turned on the computer, this morning. I fixed the Disk Read error by doing a system restore. Now, I wanna know if this can be a motherboard problem? Because this hard disk is brand new, and both my memory sticks are new too. I was having problems in Windows 7 getting fatal errors all the time, and switching to Windows 8.1 fixed it for me. I used my computer on the Windows for a while but since then I've received the error twice, once I fixed it by getting a new SATA and DATA cable, second I fixed it by a system restore.

I'm 100% sure it isn't a RAM or HDD problem, I was thinking if my motherboard is dying? Considering the fact that voltage fluctuation has been happening for the past month or so, can it be a possible problem? Motherboard is the only thing that remains right now that I would think to be a culprit, but a personal opinion from you guys would be nice.

Okay, move back a few steps. You're '100% sure it isn't a RAM or HDD problem' - how do you know this? Disk read errors are 99% of the time problems with the HDD.

Also, getting a new SATA data cable will not fix anything. The chances of you having a bad cable are microscopically small, literally might as well be impossible.

This 1TB HDD is pretty much brand new. Before, I was getting fatal errors with my 250GB HDD. I was just assuming that it can't be the problem since it's entirely new? Or I may be wrong?

The 250 is the old one, I'm not using it anymore, it actually had a problem, so I just stopped using it. But now this is a new error.

Oh and another thing that happens is that, when I'm playing a game, like Garry's Mod/Heroes of the Storm/ GTA V etc, the screen goes black and into power saving mode, sometimes disk read error will appear after I start the computer, which I temporarily fix again by re-attaching the HDD cables.

Can this also be the cause of a faulty PSU? The guy who sold me the computer says that the PSU may be faulty....Do you think any different perhaps?

My rig is:

HIS HD 7770 GhZ Sapphire OC edition,
g1.sniper.b5,
4GB RAM x2,
1TB HDD x1,
480W Legend PSU.
