Indexed searching slow as glue

Am I the only one that absolutely hates Windows 8.1 indexing and search?

When I use the search box in explorer it takes a minute to search through a 2tb hdd. This is despite the fact that the drive is fully indexed and the background indexing is literally constantly chugging the drive to death. I even disabled content indexing to conserve resources. In addition, it seems like virtually any keywords pull up dozens if not thousands of unrelated entries.

I miss my old Win XP F3 key file search which pulled up all files virtually instantly. How can such a basic critical function be so worthless?
Should I disable indexing and go to a third party indexing app?

4770k 16gb ddr2400 Samsung 120gb ssd, all blazing fast.
I've noticed this on modern laptop and different machines.
Why index if everytime a search is performed it has to scan the drives before returning results?

Cheap freeware filesearch utility that I used in XP gave near instant relevant results when 8 IDE drives were indexed.

Can I just fully disable Win 8/10 indexing?
