is it possible to use two 4gb sticks and 1 8gb stick together (RAM)?

I already have 8 gb ram on my pc (2x4GB sticks) and I might add more, probably double it to 16 gb but can i add 1 8gb stick instead 2 4gb sticks? i want to keep one ram slot open in case i decide to add even more. also, this is ddr3 ram if that helps.

heres my motherboard if you need compatibility stuff: https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/H97PLUS/

Solution
You can do that, but I wouldn't. It would be better to install 2 sticks of the same speed (prefer same brand as well) to increase your memory. RAM tends to work better in pairs.

alright so its fine to switch the 2x4gb sticks out and replace with 2x8gb sticks, right?
