i7 4790k + Corsair H100i = 94c

Hi,

I'm sure I installed the H100i correctly. It is very tight on the CPU, and the bracket is on the right way. Using the pre-applied thermal paste.The two fans on the radiator pull air from outside and pull it in. No overclock.

These temps are way too high. I wan't to avoid re-applying paste/resetting if I can.

What is everyone's opinion? Maybe the motherboard auto settings are apply to much voltage. The V Core hit a max of 1.308v

This sounds somewhat familiar. After I received a motherboard replacement after it was fried by a breaker being tripped and reset (I wasn't home), my 4790K + Seidon 120V combo did the exact same thing. Sitting on the BIOS screen caused a slow but steady temp march to around 94C. Idling inside Windows was only marginally better due to thermal throttling. I must have reseated and reapplied paste at least a dozen times thinking it was too tight, too loose, the bracket was one wrong, too much paste, too little paste. I systematically checked the three components in question with spares: intel stock cooler, MSI Z97 PC Mate and G3258. The water cooler behaved the same way on both boards and with both CPUs but there was marked improvement with the stock cooler, with stock idle speeds in the mid 50s for the 4790K.

By process of elimination, I arrived at the conclusion that the pump had failed despite the light being on. Check your temps with the stock cooler. If the temps are lower, you can be pretty damn sure it's the H100i.

20 Minutes of Pirme96 28.5. I will downgrade and will take a look in the BOIS too.

I checked with CorsairLink as the pump is connected to the USB 2 header and I can see the pump moving. So I guess that means its ok?

Will report back with findings.

That is the auto settings. It will stay within its max rated VCore. Lowering it is not the right choice to make, The version of Prime95 is causing the excessive temperatures.
 


If it was a consistent voltage then yes. On auto it will drop depending on the clock speed. Remember this was the voltage when running the CPU at max under 100% load and with AVX2, not normal every day use. For the most part he will probably never hit that top voltage.

I managed to get the CPU VCore down 0.108v by using a negative offset.

A lot better but is it still a bit too hot for water cooling? I can't get it down any further without BSOD.

Stressed test with OCCT.
 
Is that with Prime95 26.6 or the 28.5?

You really didn't need to drop the VCore as you are forgetting that this is maximum 100% load scenario so unless you plan to make the CPU F@H then it probably will never hit that.

And the reason why you can't drop the Vcore anymore without BSoD is because you are going lower than the minimum required for stability.

The temps for what you are running are about what they would be on a H100i. H100is are great for overclocking but not as good as a custom loop. The H100i is equivalent to the massive air coolers.

The best test is to overclock the CPU and see how hot it gets. It will probably stay around the same temperature so long as you have the fans pulling air in from the outside and pushing into the radiator (that is the best configuration as the H100i comes with SP rated fans).
