Computer is having 'micro-freezes' and is sometimes slow

Hey guys. So my computer keeps having small micro-freezes (or atleast that's what I call them). Every minute or so, sometimes longer, it slows down a bunch or to a halt. I have kept resours monitor up to try and find something wrong. My disk seems to spike, but I can't find a basis online to tell me if it's abnormal or not. I've run the memory test that comes with the computer to check ram, removed and reinstalled RAM individually, and run CHKDSK. Although, CHKDISK would NOT complete, it took over 12 hrs and it was stuck at 27%. I don't know what to do or who to talk to. Please help me! I can supply you with any information you need, just let me know.

Hello Dylan,

If your HDD was failing, I would expect you to run into other troubles besides slowdowns like that, but as CHKDISK was having troubles, I think it is worth looking into that first.
I would recommend that you download HDTune and test your HDD for errors.
You can find it here: http://www.hdtune.com/

I think you're looking in the right spots.

You could also rule out a GPU issue by trying to see if the problem persists when you switch to onboard graphics.

Thanks Skyl3r. I re-ran the chkdsk last night and it completed. Unfortunately, I fell asleep before it was done (it took hours) and when I woke up I was at the login screen for windows. . . Problem still persists after disabling my gpu as well.

@BradleyJames, what do you mean "and ext usb hdd hooked up?" Could you elaborate? Thank you

If anyone else could chime in I'd appreciate it!

i had an external usb hard drive hooked into a usb port of my computer. it was freezing the whole desktop, couldnt even move the mouse for a few seconds when i restarted the computer while the desktop was reloading. i unplugged the ext hdd and it went away
