Windows Update crashes Explorer, can't use Install disk to repair OS?

Long-story-short, I messed w/ updates to try and get rid of that annoying "Get Windows 10" icon on the task bar, and from then onwards, I can no longer try and do windows update, without it causing explorer to crash.

I found my original Win 7 install disk, booted from it, but it wouldn't let me repair -- something about "recovery console not offered" or something, blah blah etc.

I googled a fix, I think it had something about altering the registry, but I'm thinking when I looked, I didn't even have the registry entry it said to edit.

So how do I repair my Win 7 installation, or at the very least, re-enable the downloading of MS Updates?

ya, I been seeing how Microsoft been trying to slip then ''upgrade'' updates - good thing I review all updates before I download and install them

but I decline and hide them ''upgrade '' updates and don't install any of them and I have seen no issues here with 7 ..

you can try this - or should of did this . open windows update then at the bottom left there a thing for ''installed updates '' and when you click on one it gives a option to uninstall it -- and just like unstalling a program it removes that update and then you reboot and its gone

now after you did all the ones you want to uninstall/remove go to disk clean up under system tools and run it with the ''clean up system files '' and that may remove the damaged ones you screwed up or what ever ??

also turn off the auto update I like to use the '' check for updates but let me choose to download and install'' that way I can screen them first to decide weather I want them or not - if it one I don't care to get I just select ''hide update'' and ok and its gone [and it can be recalled if you find you did need it ]

good luck

just to add I would not be surprised if when windows 10 gets in full swing they will start dropping support for 7 as they did xp and vista - look at all the new hardware that don't offer drivers for xp or vista anymore - it one reason I had to jump the amd ship ..

Forgot to mention, I tried that too; when messing w/ the updates that caused this initial problem, I saws an optional update for Samsung printers. I chose it. Then my Samsung stopped working. So I couldn't find that update, couldn't remove it, so I did a system restore.

The restore said it failed / couldn't complete, but it did get the printer working again.

It's probably been a month. IDK how far back I can even go at this point.

Admirable
Boot up your pc, keep pressing the f8 key and try using the "last good known configuration" or try booting into safe mode with networking. You could probably update windows from there through windows update and remove the faulty drivers you know of through device manager

If in safe mode (and tried the above), open cmd and type this in:
sfc /scannow
Let the scan complete, and reboot the pc when prompted

Just booted into Safe Mode w/ Networking. When I chose Update, nothing happened.

Guess I'll do sfc /scannow tonight while I'm sleeping.

this up date ??

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3035583

tried to slide it on me today as a'' important'' and not as optional -- like I said you got to scan each and every one cause Microsoft is sneaky - its almost to the point whwer they are going to trick you into windows 10 or force you to it - this is about the 10th try to get there upgrade crap slid past me .

I just hate it bit you in a bad way.. never auto update anything.. and review each one first before downloading and installing ...

I guess Microsoft is doing 2 a day now on them ''upgrade updates '' wow

I guess guys who dont look and install all these will turn on there computer one day soon to find they now got windows 10 installed ?

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2952664

something's up with all this upgrade updates. its just one right behind the other -- maybe your going to be forced to run 10 or your old windows will be rendered useless ??

There is such a long list of installed updates, I have no clue which one(s) I would need to uninstall.

I traveled over the weekend, so didn't run the sfc /scannow, but just ran the regular old scan and checkdisk on restart. When I got back and tried to update, still got the explorer crash, so that didn't do the trick.

May try sfc /scannow tonight, see what that does.

as far as the updates just click on more information and you wiil go to the support page for that update like the ones I posted above -- is it worth getting things fixed and then install the updates all over again ??

like one I got one time it was like a 16 mb update just to change the ruble sign ??? 16 mb for that ?? hide

personally I think if it don't fix with sfc/scannow your better off reinstalling -

I also think Microsoft sabotages there old os's [and makes deals with venders to do the same ] to make you think you need to get [spend money] on there latest - there not making money with you running that old 7 you need 8.1 or better yet 10

cause they sure been cranig that upgrading updates down my throat . I bet I done hid like 15 or so of them all ready

this is the one that caused amd driver issues but should of been auto removed or fixed by Microsoft there a few more to look at that caused issues as well around the same time frame give or take a month or 2

KB3004394 causes numerous problems, including AMD driver issues

I just don't recall what ones exactly look into these ???

one tyhing I would look at is to see if your harddrive is not failing and got things corrupt - this can cause those issues you got

if you got a wd drive use the data life guard tool for your drive or if Seagate your there sea tool

sfc and chkdsk may miss something like read /write errors
