Hi there.

I am driving myself crazy deciding which drive to spend hundreds of dollars on.

My laptops HDD has died, so I figure why not upgrade?

I want a 480/512GB drive

But I am CONCERNED with reliability. Which will last the longest, and not lose speed.

The EVO would save me so much But I know the PRO is the GOLD STANDARD.

Either way the EVO has a 5 year warranty.

But are the Warranties Crap?

I hear people all over, good manufacturer or not, having impossible times replacing broken drives.

Will the EVO Last Me and be able to be replaced under the warranty if things go bad?

Or do I NEED to spend the extra $100 and get the PRO?

Money is Tight!!

You didn't mentioned which Samsung Pro and EVO models you are interested in. The newest models are the standard 2.5 inch SATA 3 6Gb/s 850 Pro and 850 EVO. The 840 Pro and 840 EVO are also available as well as mSATA and M.2 SATA 3 models. I'm guessing you probably want a 2.5 inch SATA 3 6Gb/s model.

I normally recommend Samsung solid state drives

If money is tight then purchase whichever model is less expensive. Typically consumers will not notice any performance differences between the Pro and EVO models.

I maintain an ssd database listed in a sticky at the very top of this forum section. Here is the link:

Scroll down to the SATA 3 section where you will find the different Samsung models listed. Follow the links to the technical reviews.

SSD longevity depends on what a consumer does with a computer. There have been several long term torture tests that have been conducted. The most famous one was conducted by The Tech Report. All of the ssd's lasted longer than anyone expected. The manufacturers are conservative with their longevity estimates. During an interview earlier this year a Samsung Vice President in charge of flash storage development casually mentioned that Samsung's ssd lab had models that had already lasted the equivalent of 28 years of typical use.

I can't personally comment on warranties mainly because I've never had any problems with my ssd's. Currently I have a Samsung 470 which is 4 years and 5 months old, a Samsung 830, Samsung 840 EVO, and a Samsung 850 EVO M.2 ssd. I haven't had any problems with any of them. I do recall reading about problems with warranty claims when Samsung first released consumer versions of their OEM drives. The customer service reps were not used to dealing with ssd problems. It is my understanding the situation has improved.

Hope that helps.
