Is a 500w power supply enough for r9 290x?
specs
i7 870
8gb ddr3 ram
2 hard drives and an ssd
and a cd rom drive

The TDP for that card is 300 watts. So for sure you will need at last 600W power suply.
I recomend get the XFX XTR 650W Full Modular 80+ Gold.
