PC Specification:
Motherboard: Gigabyte Gaming 5 Z97X
Graphics Card: GTX 660:
Power Supply: EVGA 850 W 80+ Gold Certified
RAM: G.Skill 16GB 2400MHz
Hard Drive: Western Digital 1TB
Solid State Drive: Samsung 250GB
Optical Drive: Samsung

Issue:

Hello, basically with the latest Nvidia/Geforce drivers I can NOT play a game SMOOTHLY without it crashing and making some weird noise come through my speakers WITHOUT putting my memory and core clock speed to -400 using MSIAfterburner. However, when I do this it only lasts for about 1 hour and then happens again.

People said it was my Graphics Card, so I RMA'ed it. The issue still persisted and i doubt I have got 2 faulty cards.
People said it was my RAM, I run Memtest and it came back clear.
I have also scanned my hard drives and nothing has been found.
Someone told me it could be my PSU not serving enough power to my GPU, I have tested my PSU using a psu tester (just the 24 pin connectors though) and it seems fine.
I was also told it could be my motherboard which is faulty or needs UPDATING.

However, what I have discovered is that I do not need to use MSI afterburner or do anything if I use an older driver (344.60) < is the driver im using now and the issue does not happen!!!

BUT. Eventually I am going to have to update my graphics drivers to play newer games...so?
What happens then? I can not use newer drivers because my GPU becomes unstable..so what must I do? What else is causing this to happen?

And in order for this to stop happening whaty do you think it is power supply or motherboard
I look forward to your response.

Is it a specific driver version that was causing the problem or all drivers above certain version number? If the problem was fixed just by switching drivers then I'd assume it is a driver and not a hardware problem.

Oh really.. hm that's strange and yes it is because when I use nvidias latest drivers the issue persists
but in order to receive good models and textures on gta v i need to update to the latest driver but i cant, so i've just stuck with this old one and just managed.

How do I go about this then? and i thought it would be hardware related as a piece of hardware e.g. psu can't handle latest driver? or i guess not?

because surely something is causing the driver to become unstable?

Have you tried any of the newer drivers than 344.60 other than the latest drivers to see if they have the same problem? The driver version doesn't effect the psu (if it doesn't dramatically increase the power consumption of the graphics card which in turn would cause problems with the psu, but a driver alone shouldn't/couldn't do that).

Oh okay well yh ive tried some newer ones but not all above 344.60 which I might just try and do. I'll test 344.65, 344.75, 347.09. 347.25 but I know for sure that 347.52 doesn't work and causes the problem.

That should be the latest WHQL certified driver from nvidia, so atleast until they release a new one =)

Thank you.

How good is the airflow in your system? What type of case do you have and do you have any extra fans? You should download GPU-z (http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/) to check on the temperatures etc (you can leave it running in the background and then check the sensor data after playing a while). Another usefull tool is hwmonitor (http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html).

It's relatively good i think, although the air temperature coming from the rear fan is usually warms up pretty quickly, and ii have a fractal design r4 case, i have checked temperatures and they are usually fine, but i will download gpu-z or hwumonitor and i will check the sesnor data.
