We currently have a wireless router (on the first floor). But I'd like to have a wired connection to my desktop (on the second floor), mainly for speed, as I work in GIS. Is this possible? We have charter cable internet service (only thing available).
Thanks

You have to run a wire from one of the router's ports up to the desktop upstairs. Here is another option. If you have Charter cable ports on the second floor you can move your modem and router closer to your PC. All you need is a cheap cable splitter and you can split the line between your cable modem and cable box.

My router is also on the bottom floor but I had several devices on the 3rd floor that I wanted a wired connection for. I just ran one cable up to the third floor and connected it to a gigabit switch. From that 3rd floor switch I have my gaming PC and a few other devices hard wired. I also have a gigabit switch in my entertainment center on the bottom floor to hard wire all the devices near my TV. As stated, you will have to either run an Ethernet cable from first floor to second floor, or relocate modem to updstairs.

One other option is a powerline network adapter. They send Ethernet data over power wire, and then plug ethernat cable from the adapter pluged into outlet to the PC. These devices have a real world speed of 80-120 mbps; real world of 300mbps wifi 2-3 rooms away would be more like 30-40.
