How much maximum Ram I can have per slot?

I have an Intel Chipset Acer H61H2-M2 with Four Ram slots. 1 has 2 GB Single Channel DDR3 SDRAM. I checked on internet and found that this board supports 16 GB Ram with frequency 1600/1333/1066 MHz.

My first question is as the maximum supported RAM is 16 GB and I have four slots. Does it mean that each slot has a maximum capacity of 4 GB or I can install more than 4 GB on memory slot.

2. What amount of RAM is sufficient to run Android Studio and its heavy Emulator? Do I need Graphics card or Ram is sufficient.

3. How should I buy it? 1 Single Ram or I should buy two Rams summing up to Required Ram amount. For e.g. Should I buy 2 x 4 GB or 1 x 8 GB. Also single channel or dual channel.

My Desktop details are as follows:

Summary
OS Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit

Your suggestions and advice would be welcomed.

Go to http://www.crucial.com/, and fill out their "Advisor Tool" form (manufacturer, model, etc), and it'll tell you what kits they make that will definitely work with your computer.

IIRC, 8GB should be fine (one of my colleagues uses it - they didn't come anywhere near using the 16GB they had).

It's dual-channel memory, so buy it in kits of matched pairs (it stripes accesses across both for performance, so it behaves a bit like RAID-0).

Uh, does not really matter what the MB can support. OP is only running 32 bit Windows. OP, you will need to do a fresh installation of a 64 bit Windows in order to take advantage of any memory beyond 4GB.

WIN 32, you can only use 4GB of memory max.
Install WIN 64, you can use more, up the max your board can support.
4 slots, 4 gig each =16gb is what your board supports
At the same time that also means you can only use 4gig sticks max each slot.

If you keep WIN 32, you should simply buy 1 more 2gig stick of EXACTLY, not about the same, BUT EXACTLY what you have now.

Well to be fair, 64 bit CPU's were common for quite some time before 64 bit Windows became the norm.
And, if he has been running this machine on only 2gig of RAM, then 32 bit Windows was all he needed.

Funny, I just had a discussion (ahem) with a guy on the forums the other day who swore and be danged that all his office PC's had only 2 gig of memory and that was plenty enough to do anything you wanted, or needed to do in an office with ease and speed.

lolol. he was prob only running like Microsoft office/out look/ excel and stuff like that and only had those programs installed. but yah 2gb is really low even for 32bit OS.

@Vahe Bro A: I had used the software speccy and it said that my MB has four slots. However, after seeing your post, I checked again on crucial and it said I have two slots. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

@jitpublisher: Thank you very much for informing me. I was not aware that my system is 64 bit, as it never mentioned in My computer properties, nor in Speccy. But I read other thread here and I tried all the four ways and found that my instruction set has EM64T, that means my system is eligible for 64 bit OS.

So to use 8 GB of Ram, all I need to do is to Change my OS to 64 bit. Is there any restriction to use of Ram. Is it OK to use 8GB/4GB with existing 2GB. Will that work?

Also my existing 2 GB is single channel, so my new addition should be single or dual channel?

Once again, thanks to all of you for helping me out.

Its not the memory its self that is dual or single channel, its a mode the board can run if you put the correct configuration of memory sticks in. Dual channel is achieved by installing memory in matching pairs. In other words, add another 2 gig stick to your current 2 gig stick. Or, buy a new 2 stick kit.

First of all you have a 32-bit operating system, so your computer can only use 4GB(Actually 3.5-3.8)

So even if you try to put extra ram that will not help, simply because 32-bit operating systems can only use a max of 4GB. 64 bit can handle more

Hi Jitpublisher,

Thanks for helping me.
So, dual channel is just a mode of operation. If you use matching pairs of Ram, it will automatically work as Dual Channel. What if we install two different capacity Rams. Like 2GB with 4GB/8GB. It would keep working as Single Channel??

How much does the Single Channel/ Dual Channel operation affect the performance?

What is the frequency of my Current Ram? 665MHz?? Can we increase it from Bios??

Is it advisable to use 4GB/8GB DDR3 Ram with 2GB DDR 3 Ram?

Also, please suggest me which Ram spec and Brand I should go for....suitable with my Desktop.

Thanks in advance buddy. Got to learn many new things from you all.
