I'm now saving up to buy the series after the gtx 970, but is it worth the upgrade from vapor x r9 290?!!
so the question is : Is my 290 going to be able to perform 60fps on high settings 1080p? or should i continue for saving for a new gpu which i will buy after 6 or 7 months?
thanks

At 1080p your 290 should be able to stay above 60fps for many years to come. The problem is future games are always going to be improving the quality of graphics, so you may not always be able to play in the highest settings (in medium settings they will probably still look great).
The one thing I do know is there will always be a new and better gpu come out, and it's not practical to upgrade every time something better comes out. The longer you wait (and save) the better your next gpu will be.

obsolete? what?

Anyway, save it up for next year. There always something better on the way

The 290X is the same thing as the 390X, more or less. Although the 390X might get support first, Direct X 12 support will be brought to the 200 series too, maybe even to the first GCN products too. In fact, AMD's press release for Fury mentioned a quote from another company that claimed the last three generations of AMD hardware will be Direct X 12 compatible, but don't take that for granted until we see it.

Regardless, the vast majority of games obviously won't switch to Direct X 12 no matter how much better it performs because they were already made. Pretty much all games currently in development are also only Direct X 11 based games and that won't change for a year or two, maybe even longer. I guess you've already forgotten how many years it took for people to use Direct X 11. It's been out for a long time, yet only became popular in the last couple years.
