So I did not see this before, but apparently people have bricked their boards trying to update their BIOS on these MSI boards. My question is how do update this board safely? How do I check what version is currently on the bios? Apparently after a specific update the Bios clearing doesnt work. Would really not want to destroy my board and it makes me scared to try to do the update.

Solution

If you would like to avoid this issue please follow these steps

Download the update via MSI website here is the link that is specifically for your motherboard.
http://www.msi.com/support/mb/Z97-G55-SLI.html#down-bio...
(This link is specifically for your motherboard and nobody elses.)
After you download it, put the file on a usb stick, go to the bios and choose usb flash.
Follow the onscreen steps and you are done.
That is how I update my bios. My mb is a MSI Z97 GAMING 3

If you...

I have a msi motherboard and DO NOT update your motherboard through msi live update. That is how people brick their motherboards.
Download the update via MSI website here is the link that is specifically for your motherboard.

After you download it, put the file on a usb stick, go to the bios and choose usb flash.

If you want to see a video scroll to the bottom of the page and in red writing it should say how to update it safely

Hope this helps :)

really now?? brick there mobo via update on MSI live update? that's the most silly thing i heard. most people who brick there motherboard are those people who download BIOS update themselves or people who doesn't realy know how to update them.

I know it sounds ridiculous but its true
MSI live update is a bit buggy and on the MSI website it says that its recommend to do it on the MSI website and not the MSI update. So if you do it your way you are taking a risk of accidently bricking your motherboard.
Dont believe me?
Look at the reviews for the motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130776
Look at the second 1 star review it says these particular words
Pros: Has a lot of option which include 3 way SLI, USB 3.0 ports, nice colors and overclocking capabilities.

Cons: Msi Live Update ruined my motherboard.

Other Thoughts: Everything was working great until I updated my bios through windows Msi Live Update. Now my computer turns on by itself after I completely shutdown the computer. Also it restarts after I ask it to shut down. I went through a week trying to figure out that it was from the bios update. I tried out a new psu, remove the front power case connectors to the board, re-flash my board, reinstall windows, etc. Doe not seem right for a software to ruin a brand new board. I dislike I have to RMA, pay for shipping and get a refurbished board after having it for less than two months.

I have this motherboard by the way and have updated it before without bricking it.
Hope this helps :)

that's because they don't also update MSI Live Update.
btw i fixed PC for a living and usually people came to us. after they don't properly update they BIOS. or try to update they while having BSOD in windows.(most likely because they don't know how to update the BIOS via DOS). oh if you really believe it's buggy then give me link on MSI official forum saying it's buggy not newegg.

May I ask you a question
Do you actually have this particular series motherboard?

I understand MSI live update is supposed to update the bios, but if its listed in the reviews and on the official MSI website it is obviously not safe. But if you do the MSI live update, you are taking a risk.
Have a look at the MSI Z97 GAMING series motherboard reviews on amazon. People are always complaining about bricking their motherboards from the MSI live update.

EDIT
We have almost all MSI motherboard here in the office. and yes we have 3 of them. we used them to test OC'ing stability test and compatibility test.

btw could you please stop qouting amazon, newegg and other website's. show me on a Official MSI website that they actually said that it's buggy. and tell people not to used them.

Keep in mind I'm not telling MrGameandLift not to use MSI live update, I'm just saying the safer option so he can avoid bricking his motherboard.

On the bottom of the page there is red writing showing a youtube clip on how to flash the bios here is the link
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRyFMf0D9Lc

Now do you see any MSI live update?
They are saying to go to the official website and download the bios update manually
And thats the official MSI
So overall it is best to update the bios my way instead of yours as its a safer solution and most definitely wont increase the risk of a bricked motherboard. Look at the people who do it your way
https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/1rgrx4/warning_to_those_using_msi_motherboards_do_not/

Hope this helped :) :) :)

No. but they also don't tell people not to used them to update the BIOS via Live update. (and probably this is for people who dont have live update installed or older mobo's)

EDIT
huh? are you still editing? why do they need? it's already in the manual?
btw "Exactly they don't tell people about the MSI live update as it increases the risk of bricking the motherboard." actually they do read the manual it's there.

Exactly they don't tell people about the MSI live update as it increases the risk of bricking the motherboard.
Its not a old motherboard as its on the bottom of the update page of the motherboard in this title

Dont believe me? First off the video was made in 2015 on may 25th and second its on a newer motherboard better than my one

Well do it your way, try to convince the thousands of people who bricked their motherboards to do it your way
I'm not here to fight

EDIT
geez man. do really think that a big manufacturer will not tell people(CONSUMER) that if they use "MSI Live Update" it will brick the mobo?? there reputation is gonna be ruined if they don't press release to that effect! so all your telling me is nothing.

btw they gonna be sued if that happend.
im not actually fighting with you. because if you have a press release or something i'm also gonna tell my clients not to use it. but the fact is, all of my client who i told to used it says "it' great, and easy to use" that's it. i haven't got a complain that it brick their motherboard. and no press release. only other people saying that it did brick their mobo. that's it.

They won't get sued they have given replacement motherboards to the people who bricked their motherboards and said to them to do it my way not yours. Thats why their reputation is still good. And people have the right to sue if MSI actually told people to update via MSI live update which they havent.

Well go ahead sue them they'll just give you a new motherboard. They arent going to care. I'm guessing that manual is addressed to older motherboards and not this particular motherboard?

EDIT
don't really know about that.
well we can argue all we want but without an actually MSI representative to answer the question(is it safe to use MSI Live update to update the bios), we won't know for sure.

btw
a colleague of mine just said that he bricked he's mobo updating the bios manually. it seems the mobo was already faulty to begin with then updating it bricked it. (MSI B75A-G41), he also said maybe it was the same(faulty to begin with). well that is he's opinion on this.

Well if you follow my instructions you surely won't brick your motherboard.
But all motherboards update differently
Just be sure not to turn off your computer while flashing!

Have a good night/day :)

LMAO. that made my day. have a nice day too.

MSI Live Update's failure to properly update is actually what they are attributing the failure of the boards to.
