I have a AMD 8320 cpu and a r9 280 gpu, should I upgrade my gpu to a nvidia 970/980 or should I upgrade my cpu to an Intel 6 core? I'd need to buy a new mobo as well. I do a lot of 3d work in cinema 4d and maya, mostly fluid simulations, and I do like to play my games at 1080p 60 fps on highest settings too.

Intel 6 core offers nothing for you. A i7 quad core would be a good upgrade in a few months. For now you should upgrade your graphics.

Note a quad core i5 will out perform your current CPU by 15-20% in games. A 4790 would help with the renders but Intel is about to release a new update of CPU's early next month.
