Hi i cant make up out of this categoriesation if im right here but here is my problem.

I have a external hard disk a Western Digital Elements 2TB USB 2.0 Desktop External HDD And i have all my files on there.
A couple of days ago i thought it would be wise to take the files off and put them in a new hard disk sinc i bought this one like 4 - 5 years ago.
Durring the extraction the disk got a little tap on the housing from a low fall on the ground but now i cant get my pc to regonize it anymore not even when i take out the hard disk an connect it directly in the pc.
Usually the white led on the front only starts to blink when its connected and stops when it disconnects but after the fall it still doesnt blink until its connected but when i disconnect the usb cable the led stil keeps on blinking.
Its possible because it has a external power source but it shouldnt be doing that.
But when its connected i can hear the harddisk run and i cant hear a ticking sound.

Is there anyone who can shine some light on the matter?

Hi there TheFrank,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive. :(
It is possible that the HDD got damaged from the fall. In that case, your safest bet for recovering the data is to contact a data recovery company.

Also, you shouldn't take the drive out of the enclosure as the model is most probably hardware encrypted and the data can't be accessed unless the drive is in the enclosure. What is the model of the drive?

Is the drive recognized by BIOS, Device Manager and Disk Management? In case the HDD is not recognized by these, then I guess you will not be able to access it with software tools.
I guess you can try something simple as just changing the USB cable as well as the power cord.

You can check WD's Partners out: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=T95BK3

Its possible that the HDD broke because of the fall but i have all my data on there which i really want back so im not in the position to give up on it yet.
Its a posibility to sent it out to have the data recoverd from the disk but that quite expansive ($800-$1000) for what i heared about it.

The disk is a Western digital caviar green 2.0TB sata 64 cache
Model WD20EARS-00MVWB0

I tryed disk manager to find i but it cant find it not even when i connect the disk derectly in my PC it just doesnt seem to pop up

I actually asked about the device not the HDD inside. My guess would be that is My Book, which is a hardware encrypted model. Though, as the drive is not recognized by Disk Management even when it is outside the enclosure(even though you may not be able to retrieve the data that way, the HDD should be at least recognized), then I guess you will not be able to access it with software tool. It seems that the HDD itself is damaged but not the enclosure.

Unfortunately, in my view, your only option is to look for some professional help.
Some users try to open up the HDD themselves. Keep in mind that you shouldn't do that.

It may be a good idea to wait for some more replies as well.

Let me know in case you have some more questions,
