Asus Z97-A and Windows 7 - Have to turn off xHCI for USB ports to work?

So yesterday I went from Windows 8.1 to Windows 7 (didn't like 8) and right after I installed the USB Drivers that came with the Motherboard driver CD, my USB ports stopped working. After some googling around with my phone the solution was to turn off xHCI, which basically means turn off USB 3.0. and have them run as USB 2.0..

As far as I could tell only my USB 2.0. devices didn't work (mouse and keyboard are USB 2.0.) while my external drive seemed to work (USB 3.0.).

After turning off xHCI everything works again, except all USB ports are now 2.0., and that's annoying seeing as how they should work like both 3.0. and 2.0 ports. Now my external drive's transfer speed is severely crippled.

Why do I have to have xHCI off? Is this a driver issue? Motherboard issue? What can I do to be able to keep xHCI on Smart-Auto, which worked fine with Windows 8.1?

Appreciate any help.

I installed the drivers that came with the Asus Z97-A Driver CD. Why wouldn't they work?

But if I want to uninstall the ones I've got installed now and get completely new ones from ASUS' website, how do I go about finding the drivers that I need to uninstall? I tried uninstalling USB Root under device management, but that just cut off my keyboard and mouse from being usable.

I'm sorry, I'm a real tech newbie :)

I forgot to mention; I tried downloading and installing those drivers, but all I got was an error message saying "your system is not compatible" somethingsomething.. I read the readme and couldn't see anything under requirements that my system doesn't have.

Also, my case had USB 2.0 in the front, which are plugged into the motherboard's USB 2.0 contacts. They don't work either with xHCI enabled. Shouldn't they work regardless of that?

If your getting incompatible drivers then its either the wrong rig or your not getting the right 32/64 bit ones.

You need to find your Computer icon and right click and go to properties. then look in the system section for 64 bit or 32 bit for your OS type. then thats the type of driver you need to ask for at the website. other then that you need to be more careful how your finding your driver.

But the poster that talked about down grading to windows 7 for newer rigs that were windows 8 rigs is right; it may be that your manufacturer didn't bother with making windows 7 drivers and that can be a real problem. windows 10 is coming out next month that might be the best way to go.

As far as I've understood, xHCI is basically the same as USB 3.0. If that is correct, then I'd really like my Motherboard to be able to function properly with USB 3.0. so my devices that have USB 3.0. can take advantage of it.

skitszo; I chose the 64bit Windows 7 list of drivers from ASUS' website, which is what the OS I have is. I may have underrated myself saying I'm a tech newbie. I'm more of a tech intermediate. :)
