hi,

i want to get some network device with ethernet ports (alike a router) OR other simple system, that will connect to my home's main router so that i can have access to the internet via ethernet cables in my down stairs of my home.

running a ethernet cable is NOT an option.

currently i am using a imac desktop as a wireless router to share internet for my pc desktop. Problem is, the imac has to be on ALL the time, which i dont like or want. please give some advice
i am considering a network bridging device but dont really understand the whole concept.

While I am not completely clear on your setup, your budget is really key to what you can do.

My choice (and probably the least expensive) would be to get a pair of very good powerline adapters (AV2 MIMO would be best, but the AV2 600Mbps would also be okay -- they don't reach the marketed speeds but do fairly well, take a look HERE to see what they will really do). Then simply attach either a 5-8 port switch or an inexpensive router configured as an access point, which will give you a much better wireless signal in that area and the three unused LAN ports can be used for Ethernet just like a switch, and a switch can be attached to one of the LAN ports for further expansion. If the switch or router LAN ports are gigabit...

If the switch or router LAN ports are gigabit, all of the local machines on that segment will connect to one another at gigabit speeds if they have Ethernet gigabit adapters. Anything that connects over the powerline will be slower, in the 100 to 200 Mbps range for good powerline adapters.
