Hey all! I don't know If here was the right place to ask due to there being a few OS sections so I'll also post in Windows.

I am thinking of going with this build for my first work server:

Graphics : 1 x 16 GB
CPU: Quad Core
RAM: 1 x 8 GB
HDD: 1 x 500 gb
OS: ???

What I basically want to do with the server is:
- Hosting ( i mean host websites,servers)
- Remote access

What OS do you think I should go with? Should I go with Windows (server 2k3/2k8, home server) or something like Linux (Ubuntu Server 8.04)? I have built PCs before so building it wont be hard, it's just choosing the OS.

Note: I have never dealt with Linux before.
i worked before with some hosts but with linux hmm never had to work with linux maybe sometimes but with commands on a notepad i connect with a program something root i think -4-.

Any help/suggestions would be great!

I think a lot more detail about requirements is needed before it would be possible to give a meaningful answer to your question.

Hosting web sites - What sort of sites? Do they rely upon a scripting language such as php, java, the .net framework, etc.? Do they need a back-end database? What sort of security do they require?

Servers - What exactly? Games servers, file servers, print servers, DHCP, DNS, FTP, etc.?

Remote access - To what? To files for the web server? To general files shared between many users? To other computers on the network?

Think a little about exactly what you are thinking of running on this computer and come back with a more detailed specification. Then it will be possible to give a reasoned answer to your question (which may well be "None of the above").

In the meantime I think it a little premature to mark your question so quickly as "solved" as this means that people won't bother to read it. There are probably a number of solutions that haven't yet been covered.
