Running a Separate Graphics Card For Video Output?

Hey TH,
I am running a R9 270x in my PC, and love it. however, I would like to hook up a third monitor, but the number of ports on the card prevent this. I've been told that I could purchase another, very cheap card (such as This Refurbished MSI R6450) and use that just for video output. Is this possible?

Yes, but you cannot play games with Eyeinfinity on it. But you can drag stuff over etc. etc.

I am a bit lost on why your R9 270x is unable to output to 3 monitors.

Are you wanting just a third display or eyefinity?

Which R9 270X do you have? Every one I can find has 2 DVI, and HDMI and a DP so you can easily do three with that sort of setup.

If you want it to be quiet make sure you get a card with no fans that is very cheap. An Nvidia GeForce GT 630 Asus Silent is 60 bucks. http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-video-card-gt630sl2gd3l

My friend owns one in a silent base 800 and he says he cannot hear any fan noise whatsoever.

Lack of ports? You mean no HDMI or DP? Thats when you get a converter, which will be cheaper than a second GPU. In your case you can use either two DVI and the DP or one DVI, the HDMI and the DP to output to the monitor:

That is all you need to get a third monitor working on your current GPU so you will have less hassle and possible issues.
