Okay, there are deals on newegg for refurbished workstations with lga 1366 motherboards (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4GH3379656&cm_re=lga_1366_x58-_-9SIA4GH3379656-_-Product). I did more research on the motherboard inside of the T3500 and on Amazon it said that the motherboard supports 6 core intel xeons. I now want to know if these motherboards will be able to overclock the 6 core cpus assuming it has proper power supplies and coolers.

Solution
Server or workstation motherboards do t usually jave overclocking. They are meant for stability. In addition Dell in general usually never has any overclocking enabled.

Also by the time you get a gaming graphics card and a hard to find old obsolete cpu you have probably spent more than a new pc would.

Why are you starting with a workstation/server box, when you are trying to make a gaming PC?

Doubtful if your final $$ to game performance ratio will be better than if you start with components aimed at gaming from the start.
And highly doubtful if you'll be able to do any overclocking with that.

I use an hp x58 i7-920. The only way to overclock is use one of the software overclock tools like SetFSB if you can figure out which PLL is on the board. I don't recommend trying. The Dell shipped BIOS does not have any of the OC options you need. The case will not support a MB upgrade (the atx MB panel is tack welded into the case and the case headers use a custom plug rather than individual wires so they will not fit on a new MB. Ask how i know.)

The bios on the MB may or may not support an upgraded processor. Not all processors will be supported.

The x58 chipset MBs supports processors with performance equivalent to a modern i3..... unless you are transcoding or ripping video where the i7 quad core hyperthreading and triple channel memory make an x58 system a BEAST better than an i5.

IF you get the used server plan on running it at stock clock, plan on adding a strong video card and gaming happily for years. Just make sure the refurb server comes with a 64-bit version of windows. Also make sure the server has a good cooling solution, that gen i7 used a lot of power even at stock clock. Some servers get cooling at the expense of lots of noise. not a good trade.

Update: I just looked at the specs ... 1x Intel Xeon W3505 2.53GHz Dual Core CPU, ... run and hide from this processor. A weak i3 will kill it. dual core and slow.

The motherboard does support the x5650 and the reason I was looking at it for gaming was 6 cores w/ hyperthreading and over locking ability. Since most x58 motherboards as of now are very expensive and only a select few of those can support the Xeon overclock I was hoping that someone would have information as to if the motherboard in the dell (yes, I know it would be unlikely for a dell) would support overclocking
