I have a RTn66u router in my home with a SSID that has access to the entire network and a guest SSID that accesses only the internet. The internet is accessed through a satelllite modem.

I have a cat 6 wire running to barn from the home RTn66u router. I want to configure an old rt-56nu router in the barn to provide wireless access to barn. The Rt-56u router can be set up as an access point or router. If I set it as an access point, I have to provide it with a new SSID - when I do this, it does not provide access to the internet. Setting it as a router seems like the right answer, with the dhcp turned off and a static ip but I cannot get it to work.

Any help would be appreciated.

Solution
The N56U works fine as an access point (I have two). Get the latest firmware. Using a wired connection, set a static IP LAN address (in the appropriate subnet of your main DHCP server). Toggle the Operation mode to access point (MAIN page near the top). Let the toggle do the setup instead of setting stuff by hand. Connect the main router to the AP. Verify you have internet connectivity with the wired connection. Set your wireless info. Verify your wireless internet connectivity.
