I am looking for the best way to compress media, specifically .mkv and .avi files, into some type of archive format ex. (Winrar, 7zip) for long term storage.

I have nearly 4 TB's of media that I would like to back-up to prevent a total loss of data in the event of a HDD failure. The goal would be to compress it as much as possible to put on an external HDD to be stored in a closet or off network, in case of NAS failure.

So the question is 2 parts. First which format for the compression is the best, .rar, .rar5, .7zip, .tgar? Second, which media is best to bkup to HDD, magnetic tape, cloud?

Would appreciate some feedback and what others have done to back-up their media. Thanks in advance!!!

Get an external off newegg, and don't worry about compressing or tape. Tape isn't worth the up front cost, the cloud is slow. 4tb external desktop hdd can be had for less then $150. No worries, just toss in in your closet and forget about it.
Am not 100% sure but I believe Audio/Video media are already compressed therefore further compression is not necessary.

My media collection is fairly modest at 2TB and I back it up to a single external 2TB. If I ever lose both, it's God's way of telling me I should find a new hobby.
