Connecting two wireless routers to same internet connection

I have TWC modem\wireless router. I have a lan connection from that router to a downstairs wall connector. I'd like to connect another router (cisco m10) to this lan connection so I can get a better signal downstairs.

I tried doing this and then all my devices couldn't connect to the 1st modem. One computer had a warning saying there was an ip conflict.

What do I need to change on the 2 router to avoid this? I changed it's internal ip address.

Thanks,
Rut

Solution
it should not introduce any lag. if you connect to it via wire it is as fast as connecting via wire to your main router. the slowest part of your connection will be the wifi.

So what exactly does this connection type do? Is it acting as a repeater for the main router? If so, does that introduce lag going between the two or is the fact that they are connected via the lab cable make it just as fast?

Thanks
