It's been several months since I did this...but IIRC, I had some problems with the USB installers. I have used that one, but you might try a different one. As I say, there are several. Otherwise, sounds like maybe a corrupted download.

You might also want to try it with a different version of Ubuntu and just see whether it's something funky about the LUbuntu format, for some bizarre reason.

I installed Lubuntu several times a few weeks ago in an old Dell Dim 4500 and it boots quickly and works perfectly and stable on every install... So there's nothing wrong with it. The "L" in Lubuntu stands for Light so it's perfect for an old Dell with low resources... and Ubuntu is not so light.

BTW I installed it repeteadly only because I wanted it in dual boot with Windows and was doing it wrong.

I installed it onto an older gateway to try to extend its useful life...
I wasn't dissing LUbuntu but trying to point out that the installer might not like its ISO
as you note, you do need to pick the right version
iirc I had issues trying to get GUbuntu...gnome desktop, no Unity...onto a stick

fits with Ubuntu tho...it mostly works and works well, but there are those places where you need to pet it a bit to get it to behave
