I bought a asus a88x gamer motherboard, and the new amd a10 7870k apu for a new machine. I knew that the BIOS had to be updated and i read up on the motherboard and for some reason i somehow thought it had flashback support, which means i could update the BIOS without a cpu/apu inserted.

Now i was going to build the machine, and i noticed it did in fact NOT have flashback support.

So my question is, do any of you know if i can boot into BIOS to update it, with the 7870k apu inserted on the a88x gamer with the BIOS version out of the box? - i have no old fm2+ cpu/apu i can use... Sometimes the official support only states a new version of a BIOS, firmware etc. but it may work on older versions, i am just not sure if i should take the chance here.

Solution
I just decided to go ahead and try, since amd said themselves that it should boot. And it worked just fine, i went into the bios and updated to the newest version no problem... so now we know :)

I do not know if it could boot into windows with bios 0404, since i did not install an hdd let alone windows.

But thanks for the feedback Someone Somewhere !
Normally it will say on the sticker with the serial number what BIOS it was shipped with. Usually boards will start shipping with the new BIOS the moment it's released.

Your CPU needs at least 0904, which was released 2015-04-17. I suspect it's already got the new BIOS on it.

Unfortunately, I don't think you can get into the BIOS without the CPU support.

I looked at the sticker but no bios info. Though there is one on the motherboard itself, and it looks like it's NOT the newest version nor the right one for 7870k, it's 0404.

The thing that confuses me is, that amd says it should post and boot into windows, but for the freesync and dx12 you need the bios update. - maybe i should just try it, but it's just a hassle if it doesn't work...

Unfortunately, the CPU often has to be listed in the BIOS so that it knows all the right specs to drive the CPU at.

Other option is to take the motherboard to a computer store and ask if you can borrow a FM2 CPU in-store to upgrade your BIOS with - they may have a bench chip that they'll lend you for $10.
