Hey guys!

Sorry if the title is bad. I want to upgrade to Windows 10 but I also want an SSD.

I don't know when I will be purchasing an SSD (Get paid next friday but want a 500gb so not sure if I can spare it this month, might have to wait til next month) but I was wondering if it would be easier to upgrade to 10 on my HDD and THEN transfer windows to the SSD or (if i buy the SSD first) to transfer windows 8 to my SSD and THEN upgrade to 10.

Any help would be appreciated as i'm quite the noob. Thanks!

Please be aware that you cannot use the free upgrade offer to perform a clean install on first attempt. You must first upgrade from the qualifying version of Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 (whether you do it through Windows Update or using the .ISO file). Ensure the upgrade is completed successfully and then ensure that it is activated. You can then proceed to do a clean install...

Either way. Just be sure you are not installing the Tech Preview for Win 10.
And for the transfer to the SSD, your total used space on the existing drive must be smaller than the size of the SSD>
So for a 500GB SSD, you want the total used space below ~450GB.

Note that your upgrade to Win 10 will almost certainly not happen immediately on July 29. Some unknown time after that.

Oh yeah I want to pretty much start with clean drives on both ends (so much * clogging up my HDD that I probably don't even know is there). I'll probably format the HDD? I think that's the right thing. And I don't think I would be installing the preview. There's a little windows icon in my bottom right stating I can reserve my copy.

Microsoft will be making the windows 10 ISO available for download so you can USB install. Personally I'd wait for that official ISO and install it on the SSD. nab 240-256 SSD then the old hard drive can be used for a secondary drive. you can even keep some of the old data and just partician it off in windows disk management.

Yeah that's a good idea. Wouldn't I have to upgrade on the HDD to use the ISO? Seeing as my current code is only for 8.1

Unknown as of yet.
If you do the regular upgrade from 8.1, then you can download the ISO and then do a full clean install, wiping out whatever is on there.

Unknown if you can download the ISO directly. MS has not stated that yes, as far as I know.

Thanks for this! A few days ago the brakes on my car started grinding and I had to shell out £130 for the repair. So that SSD may have to wait. I'll make sure to get 10 before I do any clean installing.

Thanks everyone for your help!
