I am upgrading from a slow FX-4350 to an i5 and I want to know if the performance increase between a i5-4460 and 4690k is big enough to buy the 4690k. They will both be ran on a GTX 970, please tell me if the 4690k is worth the extra dough.

Solution
In short.... YES!!

Worth it in the long run as it will give you more longevity before needing an upgrade.

I have a 4670k (with a gtx770) and without any OC there is a couple of games that push it hard, but with an OC of 4.6 stable with a $40AUD air cooler it just plows through everything with ease.

OC is some free performance, even if you werent to OC, it still seems like a decent idea, Passmark score for the 4460 is 6659, whereas the 4690k is 7755 - a 16% increase in performance. I just ran mine with a 'mild' 4.2ghz OC and got a score of 9072.... almost a 50% increase!!!
but these are synthetic benchmarks so don't treat them as 100% gospel

So it seems like a simple answer, but only you can make the call, if budget was...

Hope that helps

Seems like I will get it then, I will have to downgrade the GPU to a 960 but that is a decent card anyway with the 4GB version. I need longevity anyway so I can focus on the GPU later. Quick question, is the 4670k better than the 4690k? A few people say so.

Wait a second... lets not be too rash now....

What will be the rest of your setup?

As perhaps there is somewhere else you can shave a couple of dollars off? Especially if gaming is 99% of your PC usage.

Even a good condition second hand 770 would be better... well in my opinion anyway... and would be about the same as the 960, if not cheaper.
Heck, Ive even seen a couple of second hand 780s going for the same as a new 960.

LOLz,

Well you might JUST be able to tell a small difference :D

Heres an idea,
Get the 970 (or 980ti) now, and wait till the budget allows to go the 4690k and the mobo.

The 4350 is an alright lil CPU and shouldn't bottleneck the 970 (if it does it will be tiny) .
That way you can game now, and have the best of both worlds in the long run.

A 4690k and a 970 is right at the sweet spot of gaming for the whole "price to performance" ratios

Although I do know that impatience is a bit** and if you gotta do it, you gotta do it.

Knowing me I would go overkill and snatch a 980ti. I highly doubt that the 4350 wouldn't bottleneck it, right? Thanks very much though for this advice, I would have never known. The impatience is real though, I always gotta get it when I want it.

Hmmm,

well the internet disagrees with me, however Im trying to find actual figures on performance, and its all just people saying it will cripple it severely.

if I use the pentium G3258 as an example then on some games the 970 will only have a small 5-10% difference, but in others - IE Crysis 3 - it was a 50% difference. So it really does depend on what games you want to play while waiting.

Heres the reference LTT video with a 970 being used with a G3258 vs the same 970 with a top tier i7 5960X

And if its only for a couple of weeks or so whats the problem? just drop the settings down a touch.

Either way.... best of luck
