Why do my taskbar and desktop keep disappearing and reappearing?

Ever since last night the taskbar and desktop on my Asus X501A laptop keep disappearing and reappearing. My laptop runs on Windows 8.

It all started when I had to refresh my laptop so I could update something. When I logged back on, the taskbar didn't respond, and then it kept disappearing and reappearing. The disappearing and reappearing of the desktop followed soon after.

The thing I had to update was Norton 360 Antivirus. Everyone thinks I accidentally installed a fake antivirus - meaning I might have a virus on my laptop that's causing this.

What's causing this? Could it be a massive virus?

Solution
Explorer.exe kept crashing according to the eventview. after reading many forums a tried a program called "SUPERAntiSpyware". Turned out I had a
Trojan called Vundo. Funny thing is I tried Ad-aware before, which in fact discovered something other than just cookies but appearently didn't clean my PC completly. SUPERAntiSpyware is the way to go

Another program I recommend is Malwarebytes

Hope this will fix your issue :) :)
Hope this helps

Do a scan with Malwarebytes, it should remove the virus if there is one. There is another person having the same issue as you as we speak
Malwarebytes

Free version is the same as the premium. The only difference is the free version has a delay when updating.
You can remove the program after removing the virus if you wish

Hope this helps :)

@Cazauxx I think it's starting to scan now :)

Are the stages of the scan:
1. Check for updates
2. Pre-Scan Operations
3. Scan memory
4. Scan Startup Files
5. Scan Registry
6. Scan File System
7. Heuristic Analysis

Those are the stages
Once complete follow the onscreen instructions and hopefully the taskbar will be fixed.

Hope this helps

Which cpu do you have?
Are you able to access the taskbar?
If the taskbar disapears and reappears when starting up this is the cpu loading it.
If you have a bad cpu, its just lag from explorer.exe
