Yash2000, I do not recommend getting either the FX8350 or i5 4690k for gaming.

The FX8350 is old and does not compete with ANY i5. Even the i3 beats it in a lot of games.

Your best bang for buck is to forget all about overclocking and get an i5 4460 or 4590 + H97 motherboard. This combo will be less than the FX8350 would have been while outperforming it in pretty much every game. Overclocking the 4690k is a waste of money. The 4590 will give you 99% of the performance for 60-70% of the price.

Do not ignore the locked i5s just because you want to overclock. Overclocking is not worth the extra money and you said yourself that you would have to drop from a GTX970 to a GTX960.

JQB45 is pretty much right on the spot. If you want more perspective, the only thing the 8350 surpasses the 4690k in benchmark-wise in is unzipping large archives. So unless you unzip large archives for more than half your normal usage, there are no reasons to prefer the 8350 over the 4690k aside from price.

That said, you're saving money on an 8350, but if you play any CPU-intensive games, you're shooting yourself in the foot.

I5 hands down. To match i5 stock performance with a 8350 you are going to have to buy a motherboard with good vrm's which cost more and a decent cooling solution so you can overclock it. This usually brings the AMD build cost to the same as a stock Intel build.

However that doesn't take into account that you can OC the 4690k on a decent board and cooler to performance that the AMD cant reach. Either way AMD doesn't make sense

GPU is more important to performance in this case. Go with the 970 and get whatever CPU within your budget.

It depends on what games you play, and under what conditions. If you play large multiplayer games (64-player shooters, RTS's, MMO's) the i5 will yield significantly higher fps. Going from an overclocked FX-6300 to a stock 4670k I gained about 30 fps to both my minimum and average fps in multiplayer shooters. And again, I haven't even overclocked the Intel yet.

Even if you don't play multiplayer games, there's games like Assassins Creed Unity, Total War, AC Black Flag, Farcry 4, Witcher 3, etc that are a little heavier on the CPU and these games will benefit from the extra CPU power. i5 is the way to go and don't worry about getting a locked CPU. You can still use the turbo and get the clocks up even if it's not a "k" CPU. Even a locked i5 using regular Turbo mode would outperform an overclocked 8350.
