I currently have the Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS motherboard with a ATI Radeon HD 4800 series, since the card is really old and only has 512 mb of vram (gddr3 I think) I was thinking of making a huge leap forward by buying a GTX 970. Now since the card is pretty expensive on its own and I'm on a budget I was wondering can I slap that gtx on my motherboard and then later when I get some of dat money buy a Gigabyte GA-970A. So could that work?

It supports up to PCI Express x16 cards. The GTX 970 is a x16 3.0 card.

I would not spend the money on just the card. You should upgrade the rest of your system to a 1150 or 2011 socket system. Yours is a 775 system which is getting a bit old.
