Should i get the intel I5-2300 (free, used from a friend) or the AMD FX-6300 (120€, new bought) for gaming.

Hello everyone

I'm going to build my first (budget) computer. I want it to be able to play a lot of games (ex. LoL, BF4, GTAV, etc.) But i'm a newbie so i don't really know much about it. I'm having trouble deciding a CPU. A friend of mine is offering me a used I5-2300 for free. Is that good enough for gaming? Or should i get another one? If i had to buy a new one, i'd buy the FX-6300, because it seems good value. And i don't know what overclocking is, in case you use that as an argument.
I've also seen this: graphics max dynamic frequency of the i5-2300 is 1.1 GHz while the GPU's is 1241 GHz.

Here are the other components of my computer:
GPU: MSI GTX 960 GAMING 2G
RAM: G.Skill 8 GB DDR3-1333 (2 pieces of 4 GB)
PSU: Sharkoon WPM500 Bronze
CPU-cooler: Cooler Master Hyper TX3 EVO

Thanks for reading and if you have advice feel free to comment. If you don't agree with the other components or you have other suggestions, you can always tell me. Thanks.

If you already have the motherboard for the i5, I'd take that and use it for a while until you can save enough cash to get a newer Intel system with a more current i5. The FX 6300 is an okay performer at the best of times for gaming, and is actually almost as old as that i5. At best the FX 6300 might be about equal to the i5 2300 at stock speeds with it only really being faster if you overclock it.

AMD really isn't worth it for gaming anymore unless you are looking at the extreme low end in which case an Athlon X4 860k might be a better choice for modern titles than the Pentium G3258 due to the Pentium having issue launching certain games due to being a dual core. AMD is taking what is likely to be their last crack at a high...

well looking at your build the i5 might be okay for you since it supports up to 1333 mhz i doubt there will be any bottlenecks with the 960 but i think going with the FX might better, that i5 is pretty old.

AMD is taking what is likely to be their last crack at a high performance CPU next year with their Zen architecture, and hopefully it does better than the FX chips did.
