(MSI 970A-G43) Should I buy a new motherboard or a North Bridge Heatsink/Fan?

Hello everyone,

It's definitely not a new topic, but I'm having issues with my Nbridge overheating. Idle temp right now is ~39C, but when I load up a game it quickly hits 100C and throttles itself back down to prevent damage to itself. This of course creates huge lag spikes in games. To combat this problem I've underclocked my FX-9370 to 3.8 GHz (stock is 4.4). Under load at 3.8 ghz my temps sit around 85c (yowza!)

At this point I'm weighing my options. The new board I'm looking at (after many a google search) is the Asus 990FX R2.0. However, the only notable difference (that I can see) between the two boards is the heatsink on the MOSFETS.

Should I buy a new motherboard or buy a new NB heatsink / fan. I was looking at this cooler:
Enzotech SLF-30 (mm) Forged copper 1100 Fan & Heatsinks , but I've never installed a heatsink this size and I'm unsure if it would fit on my 970A-G43.

Any help or experience here would definitely be appreciated.

Solution

You need a better AIO cpu cooler than the H60 for the FX 9370. H100i minimum really.

Not good enough for this cpu. You ideally should get a high end AIO water cpu cooler for this cpu. You could use a noctua NH DH15 or Cryorig R1 Universal .
If you recently bought this cpu and motherboard, return it for an i5 4460 + h97 motherboard. It will perform much better.

Hrmm, I honestly did not know I could get a preinstalled liquid cooler for my CPU. (Just did a quick search on Amazon) I guess if I got something like that I'd have to figure out where to put my AMD R9 Fury X's fan. I think this might be a little off topic though.

To be honest, I do not think the CPU heat is a real issue here. I'm thinking it's the NorthBridge though I could be wrong as the Temperature gauges on Speedfan are a little too vague for me. (Temp 1, Temp 2, etc.).

Any idea on how to pinpoint the temp readings? (I'm estimating here from looking at what the BIOS temp says for CPU and matching that number upon boot to the readings in SpeedFan)

It's both. Your motherboard is not equipped to hold a FX 9370. It not even on the supported CPU list because it can't handle it. The cpu should ideally be kept running under 65C ish. Anything over is not good for longevity.
Use Realtemp or HWInfo to monitor temps.

I'm doing a round of PC upgrades anyway,

What do you think of these components?
