Hello all, I have had my Evga windforce GTX 770 OC (factory oc I havent oc it myself) card for quite some time and only recently has it been having temperature issues. Games like Warhammer Dawn of war doesnt effect the temperature to much but when I play games such as Napoleon total war and im just in the campaign map alone (not the battle mode) the temperatures skyrocket to 80 celsius. Of course it doesnt get past it because the card make the fan speed go up to match it to where is doesnt go past 80. Just wanting to know what may be causing this, I cleaned out this card with a air compressor about 3 weeks ago (its only been getting hot within the last month.
Thanks in advance (PS I used msi afterburner to get the temp and fan speed)

Seems a little high for a Windforce cooler. Is it noisy? How hot is the room you're in? What kind of case fan ventilation do you have?

In the end, 80c is pretty much normal and expected, but I suspect you could do better with some case ventilation. Have you considered changing the thermal paste?

Well, the laws of physics say that if the power levels have stayed the same, then the cooling must have been reduced. Make sure the fans are still at the same RPMs as they used to be at.

And while you are at it, I recommend setting the fan curve to:

50% at 60c
65% at 70c
70% at 75c
80% at 80c
100% at 85c.

Those fan settings normally will keep a GPU at 75c or lower unless you are stress testing the card.

I have been playing with PC's and other computers for over 40 years now. So I have learned a few things.

Never ever worry about a fan dying because you used it. Fans are cheap. Fans are easy to replace. Fans are there to help keep the CPU and GPU cool. Cool enough to continue to function. Those $10 to $25 fans are trying to keep your multi-hundred dollar CPU and GPU cool.

Use them for that.

80c is your factory preset temperature target, called the Temp Limit in Afterburner/PrecisionX. As you know, your GPU will attempt to operate at exactly that temperature. Your card will target this temperature and will adjust Turbo Boost clock speeds, voltages, and fan speeds in order to operate at exactly that temperature.

Apparently those gaming scenarios you describe are causing high GPU usage and raising temperatures. What you haven't mentioned is your fan speeds. I'm assuming those are normal.

I recommend putting your fans on Auto to prefer quieter operation, rather than fighting against the cards' design. You can always play around with your Temp Limit and fan speeds until you find a balance of noise, temps, and Turbo Boost performance that you're comfortable with.

Yeah I have thought about the thermal paste but I didnt know how to change it. But it does have good ventilation, my room has a fan thats always at medium. And no areas of my case are blocked. And it does get pretty noisy, I can hear the noise outside of my headphones.
