I bought a new SSD and wanted to replace my primary OS disk with it. Coincidentally I've had my OS on a 250GB disk for a while and bought a 250GB SSD.

The SSD shows up in my BIOS. It's the Patriot Torch
However in Windows Disk Manager the hard drive doesn't appear

I thought this might have been because my BIOS wasn't set to AHCI so I went ahead and did that but when I set to AHCI I can't boot into Windows, I'm not sure why, I have the current primary disk on Sata 2. The mobo is an ASUS P6T SE. It's pretty old now, I guess...

I can boot into my Win7 DVD while in AHCI and I thought I'd go ahead and just install Win7 to the SSD from the DVD but it also doesn't show up when I go to pick a volume. This screen was taken with my documents HDD disconnected which is Disk 1 on the Disk Manager image. Actually I rearranged all the SATA ports after this image was taken, I think... it's been a long day.

What am I missing?

Hey, thanks. I should have mentioned I did the registry tweak, switched to AHCI and Windows still wouldn't boot from the IDE drive.

I see an update available for my BIOS, I'll have to do it tomorrow. Looks like all my flash drives are at the office.

Well I can't seem to update the BIOS...
Looks like I need a flash drive under 1GB according to this thread: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/301106-30-asus-flash-doesn-drive

And ASUS apparently doesn't have the windows utility for 64bit versions of windows? When I try to run it it says "The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher"

Check this link and follow the instructions to make a bootable usb with dos on it (http://www.pendrivelinux.com/boot-dos-from-usb/). Then you can use the Afudos you can download from Asus support site with the bios file to update the bios.
