I'm looking for a switch to play around with (I'm going to move my career towards networking potentially). I've been offered a Cisco Catalyst WS-C3750-48TS-S switch. Which looks like it has plenty of options for configuration. It would be operated initially stand alone, with 2 or 3 servers and a few other machines. Does anyone have any experience with this switch, is it worth getting? Any known problems? It has been factory reset, and has tested as working. Been Offered it for $75

Thanks

Rich

$75 for a 3750 is pretty cheap. It will give you most of the Cisco OS commands. I don't know of any problems with the basic 3750 other than they are probably end of life from Cisco and not suitable for production environments. To play with, it should be fine.

The software has more feature than you could ever think to use but it might be fun to play with.

There is very little market for switches that only have 10/100 ports but 48 ports is still a lot of ports in a switch. Like most cisco gear it will likely run perfectly fine even beyond the time you can only sell it for its scrap metal value.

If I understand correctly it has 4 additional Gigabit speed SFP Uplink ports, they just need the correct SFP adapters I think. As far as I can tell the adapters go for about 17-18 dollars on ebay.

You would have to check some of the stupid switches only allow optical SFP not the copper ones. I have seen this on multiple platforms not just cisco. Also make sure the SFP explicitly say they will work in cisco. It will at times give you a unsupported message.

Yes there alot of chinese copper SFP knockoffs on Ebay. So as long as I can find the genuine cisco ones I'm probably good. I only have one server right now, I won't be adding the other 2 servers until later, so I can take some time to source some legit SFPs.

The intent is to pick up a 12u portable rack mount, put the switch into it along with a couple more 1U servers, and some rack mount power and UPS, it should be fun to play with once it's all up and running. I ordered the switch last night so I should have it by the weekend.

Thanks for all the help.
