Old PC Overclocking (just to squeeze a little more power out of it)

Ok, first of all, I want to say that I know all the risks about overclocking, and stuff like that, I'm not a beginner or a noob, about PC's in general terms, so that's not a problem...

PC specs:

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Duel Core Processor 4200+ (with a massive 600g Enermax cooler on top)
MOBO: NF61S-M2A
RAM: Kingston 2x1GB DDR2 667Mhz (If I am correct)
GPU: nVidia GeForce 6100 nForce 405 (with the latest drivers available on nVidia website)
PSU: 450W no-name cr*p
HDD: Hitachi 320GB 7200RPM SATA II

I want to know people with this configuration what best results did they get from this thing... I'll post some screenshots from the BIOS, maybe someone will know why I get an annoying error like "CPU frequency too high... reset... system is in safemode" or something like that... I don't remember the exact error, cuz I'm running stock freq right now.

The Windows 7 experience is too laggy, and I play Metin2 (yeah, I know what you think about it, but I like this game), and I get like 25-30FPS out of it... Where there are more than 10-15 players, the game FPS drops under 15FPS, and is unplayable... :(

Any help is highly appreciated! :)

first thing to do if you are serious about keeping the machine going would be to add some ram.minimum of 4gb.more if you can.with these old amd cpus you want to increase the cpu frequency a little at a time.every time you increase it do a oc test with a program like occt.i use this on older hardware.if it runs for an hour without error go back to the bios and increase the cpu frequency a little more and run another test.keep in mind that doing this will also overclock your ram and this can cause instability.keep checking your ram frequency to make sure it doesnt go over its rated frequency.if it does you should be able to lower it in the bios.here is the link for occt.

For one upgrade the GPU that will help also look into a AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core 6000+ and overclock i to 3.4ghz that is about where the wall for overclocking hits with 667mhz Ram. Your 4200+ will only overclock to around 2.4-2.5ghz on that board.

AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core 6000+ Ebay around $12

Your running a PCIX16 so just about any GPU will work here are some cheap ones.

8800 GTX $20 Ebay
9800 GT or 450 GTS $25 Ebay
720 GT or HS 6670 $30 Ebay
560 TI $50

The 6000+ Overclocked and the 8800 GTX will give you at least 20 FPS or more.

I'll replace the entire computer in this winter (i5, 8GB of ram, R series GPU), but now, I don't want to spend not even a dolar in this PC.

Tell me how to OC it, 'till I get a new one...

Really it's more like $20 for an Athlon 64 6000+ on ebay. unless you want to buy from South Korea or Hong Kong which I highly advise against doing. But yeah... The Athlon 64 6000+ would be an OK upgrade.

Your motherboard isn't going to let you overclock to anything that's going to matter performance wise. I did a quick google search and found people with similar motherboards couldn't overclock even 1MHz. Your best option at the moment is to go with an Athlon 64 6000+ CPU.

That is the Buy it Now, there are 2 open bids that will go for $12 to $16. I bought one 3 weeks ago for client and only paid $12.

Overclocking is limited but you can squeeze .3 to .4 mhz out of it by playing around with the settings, will this have a huge impact? No, he might gain 1-2fps from this but moving to a 6000+ would net at least 5fps and another 1-2fps with the Mhz bump. It's been several years since I played around with that BIOS... 2009 at least, the sites that I knew where it's explained in detail have all been shut down but that doesn't mean you cant do it if you understand the basics of Overclocking. Even current Gen I3's and locked I5's can be bumped a few mhz if you know how.

OP upgrade your Video Card that will give you a substantial boost, even a 8800 GT or 9600 GS0 is a huge improvement over a 6100 Integrated Video. If you would like I can give you a list of Tech Forums where you can ask for a CPU and GPU, you can probably find both there cheaper than Ebay.

keep bumping your cpu frequency and running occt.also make sure your ram doesnt clock over its stated frequency.if it does you will have to manually set the frequency in the bios.as was stated you will not get a whole lot of oc here but i think you should get about 200-400mhz.i have on old phenom triple with an nforce 430 chipset stock at 2.3ghz running at 2.8ghz.

I don't believe he has that Option, I think it was something along these lines.

FSB "204" Things get unstable beyond that.
HT Multiplier X4 instead of X5
Vcore Voltage.. Can attempt to Underclock or Overclock it can work either way depending on the CPU. When you BSOD on a Test then Bump the RAM Voltage by .1 at time.
Kingston DDR2 if I remember hinders the process a little more than other brands. He is also limited to 2GB of RAM.

It's something he has to play around with.

Ok, it looks like I haven't make myself understood... I won't upgrade this s**t even if the CPU is 1$.

The upgrade is a few months away, so 'till then I have to deal with this thing and use it like it is... This PC run one day at almost 2.6Ghz, but I don't remember the correct settings.

I've taken a few detailed screenshots of the BIOS OC options, so you guys can give me a generic OC value (I know that "not every CPU overclocks the same... blah, blah, blah..." I want some avarage numbers, and if everything's OK I'll bump the numbers step-by-step till it crashes in OCCT).

I just need some generic numbers, that's all...

it looks like you can possibly adjust ram frequency in the bios under dram config.with this older hardware the ram will oc along with the cpu so you want to make sure your ram frequency is as close to stock as possible.keep your cpu multiplier on auto and bump the cpu frequency.2.6ghz is pretty respectable for your hardware.

This is the last time I will post in this, Overclocking the CPU on a Motherboard that is not real overclocking friendly will not gain you more than 1-2 Fps which is far from what you want. You need to upgrade that Video card to at least a 8000 Series Nvidia or AMD equivalent.

Here I have these, pay the shipping on one and it is yours, I know they work as they are direct upgrades that have been sitting in a box collecting dust.

8500 GT or 8600 GT not sure which one it is
9600 GSO Pulled 5 months ago.

Shipping is around $5 with USPS padded envolopes, when your done with the Card let me know and I will pay to ship it back so your cost is "$0" if your interested then PM me if not then good luck.
