I have this 1 TB WD HDD that stopped detecting over 2 years ago and was just gathering dust ever since. It has lots of personal stuffs that i would like to back so never gave it back to WD for replacement as i would then have to forget data in it forever.

Anyways, today - did some searching around about possible fixes to my disk and found stuffs about cleaning the PCB, getting a replacement and stuffs, so decided to try whatever i can.

Took out the PCB and noticed the connecting point to the chip on the Disk from PCB looked to worn-out. So took an eraser, cleaned it and connected back the PCB.Now connected the HDD back to the system and booted up - voila, the disk came back to life, not completely however - it managed to squeak out sounds while the system was booting up indicating life was still there - but again it never came up on BIOS or WIn-8.The sound was kind of a buzzing sound in repetition till the system booted up completely and it stopped later on.

Here is my Actual question - is this still a criteria of a damaged PCB which needs to be replaced
OR
Since my disk started to make the buzzing sound does that indicate an issue with the platter or the motor??

I will do some more research on this - in the meantime, any info regarding what i can do next would really be helpful.

Thanks,
Arun.

The unusual squeeking noise is typically an indication of hardware failure which you will likely not be able to repair yourself.
Hey there, Arun!

Sorry to hear about your failed WD HDD now! :( Unfortunately, as @popatim mentioned the noises most probably indicate a physical damage and this is something you cannot fix by yourself. Dissembling a hard drive requires a clean-room and dust-free environment (labs) and specific technical knowledge and skills. I'm afraid that if you attempt to do all this by yourself you will completely destroy the drive and the data on it. My suggestion is to turn to a professional data recovery company, though costly, they are your best bet at getting your files back from the failed WD Green drive.
You can check WD's Data Recovery Partners worldwide here: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=j5TYNa
My advice would be to get in touch with one of them.

Hope this helps. Best of luck!
