I am building my first computer and have run into a problem with the operating system. The computer doesn't have a DVD drive for me to install the system. Can I install windows 7 from an external DVD drive without having a operating system already on the computer?

Solution
I had done the same thing with my computer, most computers these days when people build them they don't include a dvd drive. Usually you can boot from external dvd device like portable dvd drive . or alternatively you can always install the Operating System with a USB device by booting from USB but of course you can not just put iso on usb and think it'll work you have to correctly configure the usb. there's a program called https://rufus.akeo.ie/ try using that to create a bootable usb stick. there are other programs you can use free and paid they all have their ups and downs. best of luck.

Agreed. Another program would be one called Windows 7 USB DVD download tool, from Microsoft.
