I know this is not probably where you post this, but I could not find the proper category to post it. I am studying computers and reading this book. They have some review questions but do not have answers. I was hoping you guys could look at the answers and tell me if any of them are wrong.

1) Why is all data stored in a computer in binary form?

A: So all hardware devices, user, and software can communicate with each other

2) What are the four primary functions of hardware?

A: Input, storage, processing, and output

3) What are the two main input devices and two main output devices?

A: Two main input devices are keyboard and mouse and two main output devices are monitor and printer.

4) What three things do electronic hardware devices need in order to function

A: A method for the CPU to communicate with the device, software to instruct and control devices, and electricity to power devices.

5) How many bits are in a byte?

A: 8 bits

6) What is the purpose of an expansion slot on a motherboard?

A: To allow external devices to connect and communicate with the PC.

7) Which component on the motherboard is used primarily for processing?

A: CPU

8) Name the two main CPU manufacturers.

A: Intel and AMD

9) Order the following ports according to speed, placing the fastest port first: FireWire, eSATA, USB.

A: eSATA, FireWire, USB

10) What are the two other names for the system bus?

A: FSB, external bus

11) What type of output does an S?PDIF port provide?

A: Home theater audio system.

12) Why is an SSD drive more reliable under rugged conditions than an IDE hard drive?

A: SSD's don't use magnetic platters to store data.

13) How is the best way to determine if a cable inside a computer is a data cable or a power cable?

A: Follow the cable to see where it leads to.

14) List three types of ports that are often found coming directly off the motherboard to be used by external devices.

A: keyboard/mouse port, parallel port, and USB ports.

15)What is the purpose of the S/PDIF port?

A: Provides digital output and the best signal quality

16) What is the most common type of memory module

A: DIMM

17) What is the difference between volatile and non-volatile memory?

A: Volatile memory is stored temporary where as non-volatile memory is stored permanently.

18) Of the two types of storage in a system, which type is generally faster and holds data and instructions while the data is being processed? Which type of storage is generally slower, but more permanent?

A: Primary storage is generally faster and holds data/instructions while being processed and secondary storage is slower and data is stored permanently.

19) What technology standard provides for up to four devices on a system, including the hard drive as one of those devices? What are the two common industry names loosely used to describe this standard?

A: EIDE; EIDE and IDE

20) What is a measurement of frequency of a system bus and CPU?

I could not find the answer to this....there are different frequencies that motherboards come with such as 2600, 200, 1600, 1333 mhz, etc. Is this what the question is asking??

21) Name three types of buses that are likely to be on a motherboard today.

I could not find the answer to this as well.

22) A power supply receives 120V of _______ power from a wall outlet and converts it to 3.3, 5 and 12V of ________ power.

A: AC; DC

23) ROM BIOS or firmware chips that can be upgraded without replacing the chips are called _________.

A: Flash ROM

24) BIOS setup allows a technician to change configuration settings on a motherboard stored in ________.

A: CMOS

25) Name three examples of secondary storage device.

A: Hard drive, cd, and flash drive

26) A hertz is ______ cycle per second; a mgahertz is ________ cycles per second, and a gigahertz is _______ cycles per second.

A: One; Million: Billion

27) An AGP slot is normally used for a(n) _____________ expansion card.

A: Video

28) How many sizes of PCIe slots are currently manufactured for PCs?

A: 4

29) Name the three purposes the motherboard ROM BIOS serves?

A: System BIOS, startup BIOS, and CMOS

30) From where does CMOS RAM receive its power when the computer is not turned on?

A: By a trickle of electricity from a battery.

Solution
Seems good.

12) Why is an SSD drive more reliable under rugged conditions than an IDE hard drive?

This should be because the SSD has no moving parts, unlike the HDD. *Example*That's why you can only use SSDs in an mineral oil cooled computer.

14) List three types of ports that are often found coming directly off the motherboard to be used by external devices.

Keyboard/mouse should be PS/2. Most motherboards nowadays don't use parallel ports anymore, so replace it with VGA or something.

thanks guys...appriciate the replies:) what about the two questions that i could not answer??? Believe they were 20 and 21. Also IAmTheTofu, what did you mean by mineral oil cooled computer? Are VGA's now outside in the i/o ports? been a long time since i used a desktop. Nowadays, i use laptops.

9. Depends on the version but if this is up to date usb is the fastest, not slowest. Usb 3.1 is 10gbps, esata if talking about 3 is 6gbps and firewire is 3gbps. But even if it's usb 3.0 thats 5gbps which is still faster than firewire. But it's talking about IDE, AGP, parallel and other obsolete stuff, I assume it's talking about old versions.

14. Kb/mouse port? Do you mean ps/2?

20. Sounds like it wants a measurement so hz.

21. Pretty much any internal io has it's only bus to control it. Sata, usb, pcie

Even if you know just basics, you know gpus are pcie so won't be external io.

I just googled and found all the answers were posted. https://quizlet.com/9494099/chapter-01-introducing-hardware-review-flash-cards/

VGA is an analog output for the monitor, like HDMI and DVI. VGA and DVI don't have sound, opposed to HDMI.

Mineral Oil cooled computers are not common. I just used it as an example. Mineral Oil cooled computers are cooled by mineral oil itself in a spill-free case. It doesn't short the computer because oil doesn't conduct electricity. It wouldn't work with a normal HDD because the oil would seep in and cause the HDD to slow down, and eventually break. SSDs are basically entirely sealed. So, the conclusion is that HDDs are not as rugged as SDDs because they have moving parts in them.

20) What is a measurement of frequency of a system bus and CPU?
A. The unit of measurement for frequency is the Hertz.

21) Name three types of buses that are likely to be on a motherboard today.
A. PCI Express Bus, Memory Bus, LPC Bus, Hyper Transport Bus (AMD), DMI (Intel), PCI Bus
