i didn't know where else to post this, but I hope that someone can help. please be advised that I am a novice, so if you can break things down barney style, it would really help! :)

here is a shot of my little rig. its nothing special, but in time, with luck, it'll get there.

my problem is that when I try to stress test the GPU, benchmark the GPU or even try to play a game at 1080 with high settings on a small game like "DEPTH", the computer will shut off instantly, as if someone pulled the plug on me. for the stress test I am using intel's Extreme tuning utility and EVGA precision 16. I believe I was able to get a benchmark for my system and it game me like 680 or something laughable like that.

I guess the only thing relevant not pictured in the picture is my 3 internal HHDs, three 1920x1080 monitors and a coolmax M-500b PSU rated at 14A @+12v1 150W and 16A @+12v2 350W. its probably several years old. (I inherited the rig from my late stepfather excluding the GTX 970) there was a sound blaster SB audigy 2 in there but I had to remove it due to non compatibility with windows 8.1 that forced my hand due to windows 7 crashing. also, I attempted to stress the gpu with 2 screens off leaving only one operational.

the only error I know of is a Microsoft visual studio location simulator sensor driver. other than that the rig is healthy at this point, excluding the issue at hand.

I spoke with a tech rep at EVGA and explained this to him and he said that if he had to bet his money on something, it would be that the PSU is underpowered or just not a PSU created for demands that gaming with a GPU like the 970 requires. But this still doesn't seem right, seeing as how the very moment that I attempt to stress test the GPU the entire computer just says "no".

I guess that's all I can really add off the top of my head. any and all advice is greatly anticipated. if im going to find a superior answer, im sure it'll come from this board. and again, please remember that I am a novice with computers but I learn very fast, especially with the last 20 hours of research ive done attempting to find solutions to this and a couple other problems ive had in the last few days.

ps. during the CPU and MEMORY stress tests, I only had enough patience to run for a few minutes each but the temps were fine. I really don't think its a heat issue, because like I said, INSTANT shutoff.

thanks in advance!

Chris.

Tier Five
Avoid IMMEDIATELY. These units are highly unsafe to use. No such protections added, very thin gauge wiring used, false advertising and too much to list. Reference to a higher tiered unit for a better, money saving and a much safer unit. For your safety's sake, please don't order or pick one up for use in your system. These units are a potential fire hazard and could even kill you, let alone your system.

i plan on getting the Supernova 750W G2 as soon as it is available again. it'll leave room for the future modding. is there any other possibility of any other hardware or software issues?

Cool, that's a good power supply too. More than likely that's what it is. Even if that was a true 500 watt, which like that guide says, you never know what it truly is giving you but it also only has 16a on that one rail and 14a on the other rail and that's really pushing it for power to your graphics card. More than likely it is not even pushing those amps and it's best to have around 24 amps at the minimum, I think recommended for the 970 is around 28-30 amps on a single rail.

Maybe someone else will chime in....How did you hook the other 6 pin up, it looks like only one 6 pin is on the psu and 970 needs two?

the GPU came with a couple of 6 pin PCI-E/floppy power adapters. so i plugged one adapter into a couple empty floppy leads. but the floppy plugs are on the main tentacle of all the other plugs so i dont know if it is supposed to go on before the drives and other misc stuff the rest of the cables goes to or what. im not a noob but i am very far from being experienced in computer hardware or software.
