soo basically, I've bought new motherboard Asus B85M-G. and today I was planning to buy i5 4460. I just posted on this forum to make sure and some guy told me to make sure it works with this Mobo's Bios and if not, I should update. I checked and I need to update Bios. but as far as I know I need "old" haswell CPU, in order to do this update :/// is it true? can some1 provide me list of Haswell and Haswell refresh CPU list so I can choose "old" haswell for my motherboard. :(((

Solution
the 4460 is not from the haswell refresh line, only the i5 4590, 4690, 4690k, i7 4790 and 4790k are from the line.
you dont need a bios upgrade for this CPU.

thank you soo much! I was already searching to buy new motherboard and sell this one .. u took rock of my back ! :))

You might be able to download the new updated bios to a usb flash drive, then plug it in and update the bios that way. Otherwise you may consider sending the board back for a return/refund and see about getting a board with proper support for the newer cpu. I wouldn't buy a cheap chip just to update the bios, the cheapest chip is liable to be $70 for a pentium g.

For the price of a temporary cpu and the cheap b85, you'd be better off just sending that mobo back and getting a decent one and still save yourself money. The updated bios were designed to allow existing owners of xyz chipset to be able to enable support so they could upgrade to a newer cpu without having to replace a board they already had rather than using an old/outdated board on a new build.

glad I could help you.

just so you know, when the haswell line launched, there were the (starting from the i5's, because i3's didnt change much since then) i5 4430, 4440, 4460, 4570, 4670, 4670k, i7 4770 and 4770k, with the h81 chipset, b85 chipset, h87 chipset, and the z87 chipset.

Whether or not it needs a bios update depends what version bios is on it. The op never said which bios version it has, just that they needed the update. The supporting bios revision for the 4460 (v 904) may or may not be what's on it. According to asus website - "*Before using the new Intel 4th Gen Core processors, we suggest that you first download the BIOS updater for new Intel 4th Gen Core Processors and then update the BIOS using this tool." This was the notation next to the i5 4460 bios support.

It's not devil's canyon, however the i5 4460 is 'haswell refresh'. It was released q2 of 2014.

I managed to find on box written that I can use flash update on bios. well I don't live in USA so sending Asus Their Mobo back will cost me about 40$ I think (If not more) so if this CPU will work on my mobo and just needs update to support it, wouldn't it be good to keep it ? :)

the reason why I didn't mention Bios version is that I don't know which Bios version it has. I just bought this mobo and I don't have parts to install it. n google didn't help me much, or im just noob searcher (

Yes I would try the flash bios update first. There are different versions of that board, the b85m-g and b85m-g rev2. Bios versions can vary depending on how long the boards have been sitting on the shelf. Turning the system on to post should show what version bios it has. The 8 series was released with the original haswell's in 2013 while the haswell refresh weren't released until a year later mid 2014. Which is why the bios may be a bit out of date.

The cheapest original haswell cpu if you had to resort to using one would likely be the celeron g1820 or g1830.

Edit: If you don't have a way to power up the board, you wouldn't know which version it has. The same identical board on the outside can have different bios versions and only booting to bios/post would tell you that information. Similar to holding a hard drive in your hand, without accessing the software on it you wouldn't be able to tell just by looking at it if it had win xp, win7 or win8 loaded on it.

i will use my old PC(which im using now) parts on it to boot it up, as soon as I buy RAM and CPU. to be more exact my Mobo is Asus B85M-G R2.0 and as I checked on Asus Website, it was realesed on 2014. (specific month not included)
