Is now a good time to upgrade from Crossfired: 290x Tri-x Vapor-x ?

Hi there,

I'm wandering if i should stick with these cards for a while yet?
I use my rig soley for gaming.

My main gripe with them is that - in combination with my case (Storm Stryker)
There is a major heating issue.. and as a result - the rig is very noisy.
Now i think this is because i have the 2x 290x's stacked right ontop of eachother;
Unfortunatley i cannot use the lower PCI-e slot pictured below, as the cards are too big and won't fit on the bottom slot.
This combined with the window you can see, leads to a massive build up of heat.

i've just recently started playing with the side panel off completley, and it's made a big difference.
The primary card no longer runs into RED (overheated)
However, the rig still makes a ton of noise.
-----------

I'm thinking of doing two things;
1,) i might sell both 290x's and buy a single GPU with the help of money i get from selling them.
2.) i might just get a new case - in hope of making the Rig run quieter...

1*) are there any cards currently that are worth upgrading to,, both in terms of performance/noise and financially
2*) Is the excessive noise from my rig coming from the GPUs themselves,, or is it my case(fans) trying to expel the heat coming off the cards?

thankyou very much for any suggestions..
This owning a computer has been such a headache,,, i almost regret it.

I would leave off upgrading because in terms of performance, you will either lose a lot of money for little gain or lose performance. I would look into upgrading your case fan cooling to ones that move a lot more air. The amd r9 290x are on par with the GTX 970, so it is pretty top of the line for home consumer.

Thanks Iamsoda,

that seems to be a sound plan.

What sort of case would you recommend? - (it's gotta be a big case - so as to space the GPU's properly)
The guy in my local computer repair shop - recommended a 'corsair' case...... .. i don't remember which one.
But this case was bascially 100% 'grill'.... there weren't any 'windows' or solid panels... the whole thing was ~permeated...

i'm considering a water cooler too,,, but then again price wise... it might not be worthwhile.

A couple fps gain and he loses money. Not worth it IMO.

I have the H440 NZXT and it has plenty of room for SLI/crossfire. Also the stock fans it comes with are really good.

Depends on how tired of the noise he is..
